ASSIGINACK—The walls were adorned with a lovely display of sheet music, vinyl records and album covers. There tables were white with alternating red and yellow tissue sheets and topped with vinyl record bowls complete with records handing from the decorative lines (donated by Denise Wabanosse) which were enhanced by tissue paper flowers—all in red, white, black and yellow colours, and polka dot balloons strategically placed to bring out and enhance the glorious 1950s feeling.
This was the inviting scene at the Assiginack Curling Club, home of the ‘Flashback to the 50s’ fundraiser which was initiated to establish a benefit fund for local families which have the misfortune of their little loved ones requiring pediatric care, compounded with financial stressors. Simply paying for parking fees, buying a cup of coffee, to emergency accommodations and even buying groceries upon return to home are some of the financial burdens families face.
On November 16 this fundraiser was kicked off with a family dance followed by a licenced dance. Various local businesses and individuals made donations to enhance the environment through fun games such as best dressed and spot dances.
Unfortunately the event was not well attended, and the costs of the hall rental were barely recouped. The security team was donated by CanCom Security, Andy Geib DJ services were donated, Manitoulin Expositor and Abordigital contributed to the advertising, Dr. Derek Lewis and Ron Wells Odjig made financial contributions. Ireva Photography was on hand with no charge to capture your special moment. Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre, White’s Garage, Queen Street General Store, Nacks’s, Musky Widow, Guardian Pharmacy, Ed’s Family Restaurant, First Tel Corporation, Rachel Manitowabi, Rachel Lewis, and In Grandma’s Kitchen all donated gift certificates. Pheasants Art and Zaamiknaang donated lovely crafted goods, which were door prizes for each dance. In total, approximately $100 was raised.
