LITTLE CURRENT—The Little Current Lions Club’s Haweater Weekend will kick off this Thursday, July 31 with the Miss Manitoulin Pageant at the Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre in Little Current.
This year’s pageant will see six girls compete for the 2014 title and will feature a fashion show, talent competition and evening dress presentation.
Contestants include Robin Lentir, Newiin Nekiiyaa Noakes, Nikita Bond, Kayla McFarlane, Katie Lynn Harper and Katrina Marie Manitowabi.
Fifteen-year-old Robin is 5’2” with medium long brown hair and brown eyes. She is from Gore Bay and will be entering Grade 11 at Manitoulin Secondary School in the fall. Her role model is her godmother Jacqueline and her hobbies include hanging out with friends, running, hockey, volleyball, photography and movies. She has won awards for leadership, being a role model, good sportsmanship, a coaching award as well as being named MVP of her hockey team. She has volunteered at hockey tournaments, Panther soccer tournaments and at wedding and graduation photo shoots. When Robin grows up she hopes to work in the health care field. Her favourite quote is, “I may not be there yet, but I am closer than I was yesterday. One step can make all the difference.” Robin is sponsored by Rob Dearing and Sons Contracting.
Sixteen-year-old Newiin Kekiiyaa Noakes is from M’Chigeeng First Nation and will be going into Grade 11 this fall at Manitoulin Secondary School. She is 5’5” and has long dark brown hair and brown eyes. Nekiiyaa’s role model is her sister and she hopes to one day be an early childhood educator. Her hobbies include walking, swimming and singing. Her favourite quote is “Just because you were not right for somebody doesn’t mean you will never be right for someone.” Nekiiyaa has volunteered at both the elders’ centre and youth centre in her community and helps out at various community events. She has been awarded the HMCS (Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship) Ontario award for most improved sea cadet, as well as other cadet awards. Nekiiyaa is sponsored by The Co-operators.
Fourteen-year-old Nikita Bond of Sheguiandah is 5’5” and has long brown/blonde hair and blue eyes. Going into Grade 10 at Manitoulin Secondary School in the fall, Nikita isn’t sure what her future career path will be but she enjoys horseback riding and reading. Her role model is her dad Perry Bond. She has received awards for her accomplishments in figure skating and horseback riding. Her favourite quote is, “If you want to walk on water, you need to get out of the boat first.” Her volunteer experience includes tree planting and helping children. Nikita is sponsored by Green Acres Restaurant.
Eighteen-year-old Kayla McFarlane of Providence Bay is 5’7” with brown hair and brown eyes. She graduated from Manitoulin Secondary School this year and was on the honour role. Her roll model is singer-songwriter Mary Lambert. She aspires is to become a diagnostic medical sonographer. In her spare time she enjoys writing, fishing and being outdoors. Her favourite quote is “Happiness is a journey, not a destination” by Ben Sweetland. She has volunteered at luncheons, community dinners, fowl suppers and drama festivals. Kayla is sponsored by Island Foodland.
Sixteen-year-old Katie Lynn Harper of Little Current is going into Grade 11 at Sudbury Secondary School this fall. She is 5’5” with blonde hair and blue eyes. Her role models are Marilyn Monroe, Beyonce and Barbara Streisand and she hopes to follow in the footsteps of those great musical women and hopes to become a musical performer. When she isn’t singing or performing in productions, she plays sports such as soccer and basketball and enjoys beading. Katie has volunteered at Anglican church dinners, sung at benefit concerts, babysat children at her church and helped at the MCTV Lions Club Christmas telethon. She was the lead in her school’s production of ‘Legally Blonde,’ was awarded the Amy Payette Award, and received the vocal award in Grade 9. Her favourite quote is “For a star to be born, there is one thing that must happen: a gaseous nebula must collapse. So collapse. Crumble. This is not your destruction.” Katie is sponsored by Loco Beanz.
Sixteen-year-old Katrina Marie Manitowabi lives in Sudbury but hails from Wikwemikong where she is living with family and working for the summer. She is going into Grade 12 at Sudbury Secondary School. Katrina is 5’8” with short brown hair and brown eyes. Her role model is Marilyn Monroe and she enjoys reading, writing, swimming and art. Her favourite quote is “I’m pretty, but I’m not beautiful. I sin, but I’m not the devil. I’m good, but I’m not an angel.” Katrina has received an award for the most improved on her youth council and has previously one two pageants. She volunteers with the elderly and helps with language conferences in her community. Katrina is sponsored by Dreamer’s Cove.
KT (Kelly Timmermans) of 100.7 The Island will be the pageant master of ceremonies, while the Island judges will include last year’s Miss Manitoulin winner Brooke Debassige, Northeast Town Economic Development Officer and Little Current businesses owner (Boarderline) Kristin Luoma and Little Current Lion Ruth Ann Bastert.
The evening will start with a fashion show, as the contestants showcase this summer’s hottest trends from Manitoulin businesses.
During the talent portion of the night, the ladies will show off their skills. Between singing, drumming and dancing performances, the contestants will be demonstrating just how amazing Island girls are.
During the eveningwear presentation, the contestants will demonstrate poise and grace as they walk the runway, followed by individual speeches on why they are proud to be from Manitoulin.
The evening will conclude with the crowning of the 2014 Miss Manitoulin.
Come out and cheer on the contestants this Thursday, July 31 at 7 pm at the Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre in Little Current. Doors open at 6:30 pm and admission is $5 and free for children 12 and under.
