BIRCH ISLAND—Whitefish River First Nation (WRFN) is celebrating its 50th Winter Carnival this coming weekend with the theme ‘Wii maamwizying miinwaa’ or ‘Together Again.’ Running from 5 pm Friday, February 10 to 9 pm Saturday, February 11, events will take place at the WRFN Community Centre, the outdoor rink, 7 Fires Youth and Elder Centre and the Birch Island Fire Hall.

There will be plenty of things to do during this year’s celebration, the community’s 50th and the first to be held since the start of COVID.

The carnival starts out with an ongoing Cutest Pet Contest, Animals Got Talent, Snow Sculpture Contest and a Selfie with a Senior contest—all taking place online.

On Friday, events start out simultaneously at 5 pm with a Smash Bros Tournament being held at 5 pm at the 7 Fires Centre, a skating party at the outdoor rink and Frozen Suncatchers, also taking place at the outdoor rink.

Saturday things really start to heat up in the community centre with a pancake breakfast at 8 am, with the canteen then opening up all day from 10 am. Morning events at the community centre include crown and anchor, face painting, a photo scavenger hunt, a mystery event, fish pond, combo cup relay race, rock paper scissors contest (at 12 pm), winter ice bowling and games of chance (both at 1 pm).

Over at the fire hall are a golf chipping challenge, log sawing, frying pan toss and plank races events begin at 1 pm, while down at the outdoor rink at 2 pm it’s the slap shot contest and an accuracy contest at 3 pm.

Pop back up to the community centre at 4 pm for speed Scrabble and at 5 pm for the Auntie and Uncle Contest. At 6 pm there will be a $25 Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament at the 7 Fires Centre and the family dance will get going with DJ Tom A Haw (Thomas Francis).
