M’CHIGEENG––On September 22, UCCM Anishnaabe Police were on hand to recognize two men from M’Chigeeng who rendered assistance to an elderly woman injured in a dog attack in July 2016.

Last year police investigated a dog attack whereby M’Chigeeng elder Pearl Bebamash was badly injured as a result. It was learned that Ms. Bebamash was out walking her small dog at the time of the attack and while protecting her small dog, received severe puncture wounds to her upper body and torso.

Fortunately for Ms. Bebamash, Andrew and Tim Debassige were nearby and were able to render immediate medical assistance. Recognizing the need to get Ms. Bebamash to the hospital, they quickly helped to transport her to the Manitoulin Health Centre in Mindemoya.

Constable Josh Shokan investigated the incident and acknowledged the compassion and quick thinking of Andrew and Tim Debassige in the aftermath of the attack. Ms. Bebamash recovered from her injuries and wanted to recognize the two men for the sincere help while she was in distress. Chief of Police Rodney Nahwegahbow agreed and help Ms. Bebamash and arranged the special award and recognition.

Upon receiving the award Andrew Debassige was humbled by the recognition and said “I just did what anybody would have done.” Ms. Bebamash shared her appreciation, acknowledging their act of kindness and compassion.

Chief of Police Rodney Nahwegahbow said, “Our communities need to recognize citizens who step forward to help each other especially in situations like this as it encourages others to do the same.”
