LITTLE CURRENT—Three hockey stick wielding Manitoulin Secondary School students launched 500 pucks in an hour at a hockey net set up on the tennis courts at the Little Current recreation centre on the weekend, raising more than $350 to aid in the battle against prostate cancer.
Braedan Case, Garret Gauthier and Nathan Howard came up with the idea to take part in the Pucks for Prostate challenge after being inspired during an English project on heroic acts, making a difference.
“We were inspired during an English project where we learned about Craig Kielburger (who founded Free the Children when he was only 12 years old),” said Mr. Gauthier. “There was an article we were reading in class.”
The trio took one of their favourite pastimes and turned it into their own ‘heroic act’ to make a difference in their community, following the skate strides of the NHL and its Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Month.
With their breath emitting clouds of steam on a frigid Saturday morning, the trio spent an hour firing pucks at the net while supporters cheered them on and dropped money into their collection jar.
