MANITOULIN—After a successful summer at camps across Canada, the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps (RCSCC) Manitoulin is off to a great start to the training year. The corps completed two days of sailing on Lake Mindemoya and a cruise along with a tour of the bridge on the Chi-Cheemaun “and this is just the beginning,” says Acting Sub Lieutenant Sylvain Boucher, who is the new Commanding officer for RCSCC Manitoulin.
“The officer staff and I will be focusing on enhancing the training opportunities for our cadets,” says Mr. Boucher. “The corps has a new multi-screen ship simulator which will help with the nautical training.” This summer petty officer first class Quentis Wood along with Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Nicholas Harper both received training aboard ships and successfully passed the boatswain mates course. The ship simulator will help them share the training they received and pass it along to other cadets. Many activities are being planned for this training year. Up next, the cadets will travel to Sudbury for a sports day with Army, Air and other Sea Cadet corps from Northern Ontario. Physical fitness is a big part of the cadet program.
“This year also marks the Sea Cadet Centennial and I am proud to announce that our own cadet Ryan Goddard was the winner of the Sea Cadet Centennial A/SLt Kyle Bailey Memorial Regatta in Kingston this summer, it was a great accomplishment and made us proud,” Mr. Boucher noted.
The corps is now actively recruiting and looking to increase its numbers to 30 cadets which will allow them to do so many more activities. The Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Program is a 100 percent free program. There are no hidden fees, no cost to join and no dues. All uniforms, training, travel, meals and equipment are provided free. Youth ages 12 to 18 may join them on Mondays at the Little Current Public School from 6 to 9 pm; a provincial Health Card and Birth Certificate is required for registration.
