Tehkummah Talk and Times – April 16

I intended to mention in my last column how happy Mum was to see Judy Middaugh at the Red Hat outing in Little Current. They worked together at Northernaire Lodge, 30(?) years ago.

Also missed offering sympathy to Helen Oswald in the loss of her brother (Sudbury). Also King Chambers’ family. King, we got to know well, by his attending our cribbage here. Our Bingo players will miss Sadie Debassige. Sympathy to all families mentioned. May God keep you in his care.

Well I was kind of lucky with my Bingo cards tonight (Monday). Fred was the jackpot winner! I didn’t tell Mum I touched her lucky star! Thought I’d just let her read about it!

Euchre tournament is Thursday night at the Tehkummah Hall, 8 pm.

My gosh, is this three in a row “Days” I mean of sunshine I have sat out. Picked up some exposed garbage and quivered at the exposed Poppy poopy winter stockpile, and there is still lots of snow cover and ice there yet, oh well. Spring cleanup means everything! Nevertheless, snowdrops in abundance I can see, and as yet can’t get to them. This is Wednesday, and a busy couple of days have gone by.

Today we had four tables for cribbage: Florence (Pyette) high hand, 21; Gib and Florence were high, 947; Cal and I were second, 926; third, Betty-Jean and Bill with 908; low, Lois and Audrie, 837; door, Lori pulled Joy’s name. Today food was provided by Joy, Mum and I had leftover makings from our Sr. U.C.W meeting at the Hall Tuesday afternoon, Bev, Pauline, Joan, Audrie, Reta, Diane, Mum. I was glad to give Joan back her books! I made raisin squares for dessert Tuesday, and I have a wonderful new recipe for chocolate icing. First you put the butter and cocoa in a pot, turn on heat to melt butter, forget it’s on, yell “oh my gosh,” salvage the good stuff, add almond flavouring and icing sugar and cream; got lots of good compliments? My mother-in-law used to say “every fault is a fashion!” The chocolate cake got rave reviews.

Congratulations to every volunteer mentioned in last week’s Expositor.

Coming up: Easter Egg Hunt at the ball diamond on April 19 at noon! April 18, Good Friday service at St. Andrews South Baymouth, 11:30 am. Easter Sunrise service at Fossil Hill, April 20.

Don’t forget to celebrate Earth Day. Providing the ground is bare. Saw a huge vulture, had to stop for a partridge near here on the road.

Well three of my darlings celebrated their birthdays on April 8: Skylar, my great-granddaughter (next door), and my two babies, Ginger and Marble. They all were born at exactly the same time eight years ago. Hard to believe the cats are that old. They don’t grow quite like Skye does!

Great to hear the sandhill cranes back in their old stomping grounds, and all the music of all the spring birds. Saw a flock of about 25 robins at our church, probably wanted to be in our choir?

Lots of flood plains, McGragh and Scott’s field. Lots of deer grazing, saying thank goodness I’m sure.

A bad week playing cards for me. Cal and I didn’t do too bad at Sequence at Sherry and Dave’s on Friday night. All teams pretty equal, always a good evening.

(Thursday) I just left Mother’s, Charlene and Barb delivered in her “Meals on Wheels”. Delivered with smiles too. Smelled just wonderful. Beef rib dinner.

We had just come from Pauline’s not too long, Bible study today, always good snacks there. She had two partridge in her front yard; lots of deer, geese and sandhills for viewing on Thursday. The deer watch will probably get over quickly this year. The snow has literally dissolved the past couple of days. It’s just about gone from my roof, a little walk and Wade and I see clumps of snowdrops everywhere!

I skunked Mum a game, she beat me one, then before we got the third done, her dinner came! Now I’m reclining, viewing TV, writing with a cat on my belly! That’s what I call multi-tasking!

Monday morning—Just looked out the door, Marg and Jim are heading home to Elliot Lake. Raining pretty good this morning. Boy, the snow sure went down fast in a couple of days. Cal and I sat and watched the snow melt from the roof on Friday morning. Then we went to Carol’s and Earl’s for a hamburger. When I came home I watched more snow melt from the roof. I scraped the patio area (so many maple key seeds sprouting), and did some pick up sticks!

Rob came back this morning. My house is like a dungeon. He couldn’t see to finish the paperwork yesterday. He went to Susan and Simon’s for a birthday supper yesterday for his granddaughter Brooke who was six years old. They had fish (Brooke’s choice) and hamburgers, and of course birthday cake. Megan and Jeff came along with the birthday girl. Great-grandma Jean attended as well. Tonight she will be great-great-grandma at Skylar’s birthday party “eights”. Marg and Jim Reckahn came for their granddaughter’s birthday event. Skylar had a party in the afternoon with her friends that involved an Easter egg hunt. Sounded fun. Great-great-grandma Jean, great-grandma Marion, great-grandma (me) and Cal, grandparents Sherry and Dave, of course, Mom, Dad and Jacob all enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner and chocolate birthday cake. Lots of nice gifts received by a smiling Skylar. Nice visiting time.

A nice lot after church today at Carol’s and Earl’s—Burt and Elaine, Wayne and Pauline, Martin and Lynda, Terry and Kathy, Borden and Joan, Loretta and Eleanor, Mum and I.
