KAGAWONG—Known for being one of Manitoulin Island’s most forward thinking communities, Kagawong is taking a step back in time as residents celebrate their annual Summer Fest from July 20 to 22.
This year’s Summer Fest promises to be jam-packed with fun, food and music. And for those who didn’t see it the first time (in 1975), or on DVD, be sure to come out for Friday’s free movie night at the beach featuring ‘Jaws.’ The show starts at 8:30 pm. Volunteers on the Recreation Committee will be serving up hot dogs, ice cream sandwiches, popcorn and lemonade at the refreshment stand. Sponsored by Billings Public Library.
Saturday features all things handcrafted: come see it made on-site from 11 am to 3 pm. Everything from toy making, jam making demo, canoe building and quilting to lace making, weaving and wool spinning/carding. Homemade strawberry/rhubarb pie will be offered for sale; crafters set up near the Post Office Museum located on Old Mill Road.
On your mark, get set, go! Kids can take part in sack races, bean bag toss and other games from 11 to 3 pm. Watch for ‘The Mad Puzzler’ to lead musical chairs at 1:30 pm. Kids of all ages are welcome to participate.
If you missed the Wednesday market, don’t despair, the Pavilion will be home to vendors on Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm. Beat the lineup and arrive early to enjoy a burger barbecued on the grill by members of the Museum Board (also at the Pavilion on Old Mill Road).
After checking out the new playground equipment on the beach, bring the kids to the Soda Shoppe for a root beer float or ice cream sundae with sprinkles while the grownups enjoy a piece of home baked pie and ice cream.
At high noon members of the volunteer fire department will challenge each other in a ‘head to head’ competition. Watch for the fire truck between the township office and small craft harbour. Come on out and cheer them on.
Back by popular demand to Rock the Dock is Flathead Ford. The trio has been working on original material with Juno award winner and two time Grammy nominated Daryl Neudorf in his recording studio Operation Northwoods. 2018 is shaping up to be a busy year as the band has been booked to perform at a number of venues including car shows, cruise nights, fundraisers, private parties and charity galas.
Flathead Ford plays with unlimited energy to get the audience out of their seats and out on the dance floor for a trip back to where rock n roll began. The band’s play list includes songs from the ‘50s, ‘60 and ‘70s: Chuck Berry, Elvis, Little Richard, the Beatles, Beach Boys and Stray Cats. Music starts at 7:30 pm at the Aus Hunt Marina following a barbecue hosted by the Recreation Committee.

St John’s Anglican Church is once again host to the marine service including blessing of the boats held Sunday morning at 9 am.
