SOUTH BAYMOUTH—Sudbury artist Christy A. Smith rolled into South Baymouth in her portable “studio” for 24 hours last week, stopping by Southbay Gallery to paint, enjoy the Island she called home back in the ‘70s, and spend time with owner Brenda Renwick, whose gallery is the only one to show and sell Ms. Smith’s beautiful impressionist work.
Ms. Smith had just come from five days at Killarney Provincial Park where she was artist-in-residence, offering classes to campers of all ages. Her next stop is Algonquin Park, where she’ll be teaching girls at a private camp during all of August for the ninth successive year.
Ms. Smith paints “en plein air” in a rapid style called “alla prima” that allows her to plunk down anywhere to capture a scene that speaks to her. She works outdoors using pastel, a weather-resistant and portable medium. During her brief stay at Southbay Guesthouse, she and her canvases moved all around the grounds as she worked on small landscapes in a lovely, relaxed setting.
Manitoulin visitors and residents can take advantage of this rare opportunity to see Ms. Smith’s work throughout the summer. There are several dozen pieces at the gallery, ranging from full-sized paintings for the serious collector, to small original pieces, prints and cards for the more casual art buyer.
