Students build and code LEGO mindstorm robots

Members of the Charles C. McLean Coding Club recently enhanced their technological skills and creativity while building and coding LEGO Mindstorm robots.

GORE BAY—The Charles C. McLean Coding Club enhanced their technological skills and creativity while building and coding LEGO Mindstorm robots, recently.

The robots were provided to Rainbow schools on the Island through a grant program. “The robot kits are rotated through the Island schools each year,” explained Bruce Lindsay, Grade 7/8 teacher at C.C. McLean.

With five kits in total there can be anywhere from 25-30 kids working in the Coding Club. “There are instructions to build and code the robots and often the students will create their own design,” said Mr. Lindsay. “This year, we saw a group create physical challenges for the robots, so they had to consider various obstacles when they were coding.”

Mr. Lindsay explained that coding has become the new language for students in elementary and high schools. Along with the advent of 21st century classrooms, coding in an important addition to programming in schools in order to provide an opportunity for students to learn applicable skills in the future job market.
