Stargazing Manitoulin showcases Island’s Dark Sky Preserve

TEHKUMMAH—Manitoulin’s dark skies will come alive this weekend for those taking part in Gordon’s Park’s annual Stargazing Manitoulin party from July 25 to 27.

This year special presentations will include ‘It Came From Outer Space: Comets, Asteroids and Meteors – A Personal Perspective’ with Greg Emery, professor at Mohawk College and member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC), Hamilton chapter, at 1 pm on Saturday, July 26.

Also being presented is ‘Curiosities of Mars: Discoveries by the Curiosity Rover’ with Steve Pellarin, science teacher and Windsor RASC member at 7 pm on Saturday, July 26.

On Sunday, July 27 at 1 pm, ‘Solar Observing of the Sun’ with Jeffrey Deans of the Algoma Astronomers from Sault Ste Marie is another fascinating talk to be held at Gordon’s Park.

As part of Stargazing Manitoulin, public observing sessions with laser guided sky tours will be open to the public at 9 pm on both Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26. This session is held in the RASC designated Dark Sky Preserve and the public will be able to view through the park’s telescope and others (a 24-inch telescope will be on-site from Florida as well as a 28-inch from Windsor) and enjoy observing from horizon to horizon not to mention the laser guided sky tours.
