KAGAWONG—An enthusiastic crowd clad in tie-dye t-shirts and bell bottom pants and grooved to the tunes of the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70S and ‘80s at a Spring Wing Ding fundraiser dance held at the Park Centre this past Saturday evening.
Organizers Sandy Cook, Ted Kilpatrick along with Jan Bainbridge are in their third full year with the Angel Bus which provides transportation for seniors. To date, they have attended events such as school concerts, the annual Providence Bay Fair and many church and community activities.
Disc jockey John Rozon spun vinyl 45s bringing back memories of sock hops, peace signs, slow songs at high school dances and big hair.
Tickets were sold for a chance to win 11 prizes generously donated by local businesses. Ten play golf cards at Manitoulin Island Country Club, donated by Gordon/Barrie Island, was won by Mike Coomes. Two weekend tickets and ball caps for Bluegrass in the Country, donated by Pauline and John Featherstone, was won by Bob Clifford. Interior and exterior car detailing donated by Manitoulin Chrysler was 0also won by Bob Clifford. Two tickets for one of North Channel Cruiselines’s Baie Fine, Benjamin or Killarney tours was won by Jean Ward. Twelve yards of crushed gravel donated by Randy Noble Construction was won by Bob Carroll. A half day fishing charter donated by Bob Henderson of Double B Fishing Charters was won by Shirley Farquhar. A gorgeous handmade cedar bird feeder donated by Doug Clark of Dig and Doug Furniture was won by Maria Carroll. A Sunset Dinner Cruise for two aboard the Chi-Cheemaun donated by Owen Sound Transportation Company was won by Mary and Brian Bell. Dinner for two at the Schoolhouse Restaurant donated by Heather and Greg Niven went to Susan Snelling. A one hour Island sightseeing plane ride donated by Tim St. Amand was won by Wayne Martin. Two nine holes of golf at the Manitoulin Island Country Club, and also donated by Gordon/Barrie Island, was won by Charlene Chambers.
Richard Edwards donated ‘Early Morning,’ an absolutely beautiful piece of white tailed deer grazing on a misty morning. Phil Burnford auctioned this painting off and Brian Bell finally outbid Richard Anger to take the painting home.
Chuc and Linda Willson donated a tasty basket from Our Garden for the best costume. Shirley Farquhar donated two gift certificates from the Cod Mother for second and third prizes. Carolyn Volpel ran this contest and each person who arrived in costume was given a letter to pin on their outfit. About 9:30 pm the contestants were asked to strut their stuff to show off their best Wing Ding outfits. They were then asked to write their favourite letter on a ballot, that was tallied with the winners announced at 10 am. Phil Burnford won the Our Garden gift basket with Mary and Brian Bell winning the Cod Mother gift certificates.
A light lunch provided by Burt Farm Meats, and sweet treats made by the churches on the Island was enjoyed over lively conversation and coffee.
