Special weather statement in effect for:

  • Blind River – Thessalon
  • Espanola – Killarney
  • Manitoulin Island

Potential late season winter storm Sunday into Monday.

The calendar may say April, but old man winter may not be done with Northeastern Ontario just yet. A complex weather system is expected to affect portions of Ontario Sunday and Monday with rain, possible freezing rain and snow.

Current information suggests several surges of moisture will affect the northeast with the first precipitation system expected to move into the area tonight. There will be a risk of freezing rain over some areas and rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 mm are possible by Sunday afternoon in a swath from Manitoulin Island to North Bay.

As the system intensifies on Monday there could be further rainfall amounts on the order of 20 to 40 mm across North Bay and Sudbury areas then snowfall amounts approaching 15 cm for areas further north.

There is still considerable uncertainty with regards to the exact track of the weather system. As a result, the exact location of rain or snow and how much rain or snow is difficult to say at the moment, however the impacts could be considerable.

Watches and warnings may be issued as the event draws nearer and more information becomes available.
