SILVER WATER—While the process of finding a new postmaster for the Silver Water post office takes place, the Canada Post Corporation has confirmed that the services provided at the current location will continue in the interim, says Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes.
“It is definitely better to keep the present Silver Water post office location open, while Canada Post tries to find someone to take over the position from postmaster Bonnie Henry (who is retiring) at the end of October,” said Ms. Hughes, in an interview with the Recorder last week.
“I have been conversing back and forth with the government affairs office of Canada Post corporation about the date for closing getting very close and have had conversations with Lloyd Steeves who has taken the lead on this locally, along with Michael Aubie in the office of government affairs,” said Ms. Hughes. “Service board members and those in the community have indicated they want the post office to remain in the community, as it is a long distance for residents to have to pick up parcels, postage or stamps in Gore Bay.”
Eugene Knapik, a spokesperson for Canada Post Corporation confirmed, “we have made arrangements to use the current post office facility until we conclude our search for a new postmaster. So there will be no gap in service or closure of the post office.”
“So the post office will remain open with temporary staffing,” said Mr. Knapik.
“An agreement has been reached (by Canada Post) with the landlord of the post office building, and they will be staffing the office until a new postmaster is found, with the outlet to be located in their own home or business,” continued Ms. Hughes. “So there won’t be an interruption in the service.”
“We are hoping that our search for a new postmaster will be successful, but at least for the meantime the post office will remain open with us using temporary staff,” added Mr. Knapik.
