SILVER WATER—It was a beautiful sunny day that greeted the many local residents and visitors that came out this past Saturday for Silver Water’s 120th annual picnic.
The always spectacular parade had a theme of ‘heroes’ and the colourful, imaginative and creative entries, which numbered 20, didn’t disappoint. Judged as best float in the parade (music, costume or theme) was the Addison and Everett crew ‘country music heroes’ float. The United Church Women’s ‘home town heroes’ took second place in the float category.
The best walking entry was the veterans (kilters) entry, led by bagpiper Eric Harper, Erwin Thompson and George Purvis. A close second was the “women’s suffragette” including Reverend Janice Frame and Molly Ainslie.
Selected as the best antique entry was the Art and Jean Addison ‘60 years (married) my hero’ entry. Tom Rumley’s 1971 old fire truck/first response truck from the Bracebridge area was second. The fire truck had been retired in 2011 after 40 years service.
The Duncanson crew entry was first in the best children’s entry in the parade with ‘our little man from McMaster Hospital and florence nightingale,’ with Alan Bois and his grand-daughter Gaby’s volunteer fire truck, second, and the Ninja Turtles preens in third.
Heroes was also the theme used for the mailbox entries and again the many, many people and families that took part didn’t wane in their obvious enthusiasm and creativity.
The day also included a yard sale, barbecue and refreshments, a pie and ice cream table, ‘fish pond’ for the kids to hook a prize, a bake sale and all kinds of games for children.
Later in the day, a delicious roast pork dinner was hosted by the St. Andrew’s United Church of Silver Water in the Silver Water Community Hall.
