Citizens in the North are being treated as second class citizens

To the Expositor:

In all my travels, it still amazes me how Hydro One in all its glory (or lack there of) still insists on restricting power to Northern communities.

I was born and raised on Manitoulin, and power outages were sometimes a daily occasion in Tehkummah. I would later grow up and travel to such exotic and distant lands as North Bay, Sudbury and Ottawa. During my 13 years away, I never experienced a power outage. Even during the big darkness in 2003, my lowly street in North Bay had retained power.

During my two plus years back on Manitoulin, I have experienced an uncountable amount of service disruptions.

The cities enjoy power and warmth year-round while communities in the north like our own, must thank Ontario Hydro for providing electricity “most” of the time. How is it convenient for the population of Manitoulin to frequently lose power for the sake of other areas? Why must we wait in the cold and in the darkness?

I cannot remember receiving a thank you from Ontario Hydro for being a good soldier, sitting in the dark and the cold. I don’t remember receiving a credit on my statement for the interruption in service.

We citizens of the North are still being treated as second class citizens. I would like to ask my fellow citizens, will we continue to be Ontario Hydro’s beast of burden?
