School board trustee cancels his ‘meet the candidates’ evening

To the Expositor:

It came to my attention through the August 24 edition of The Expositor that the newspaper was continuing their tradition of holding an ‘all candidates’ night’ at Manitoulin Secondary School, six days in advance of my planned evening.

I apologize profusely to the public and those stakeholders in education for soliciting them for help in this event. Without question, other than Liberal MPP member Mike Brown, all were willing to participate without question.

I have since found out that Mr. Brown’s office last week gave an indication that he would be available for the evening put on by The Expositor on Wednesday, September 14.

I personally erred in assuming that by having the Rainbow District School Board step up to the plate and host the evening was to give The Expositor a break as they had been doing this since the 1970s.

The only difference would have been the structure of the meeting. It would have been a debate type of evening over primarily education/health/energy issues with a single moderator asking the time limited answers and questions to each candidate.
I salute Rick McCutcheon and his staff for continuing one of the most cherished activities we have in our democratic society and that holding our politicians to account. See you there on September 14.
