We would like to thank all the volunteers for their work and donations for building such spectacular displays around the community as part of the Manitoulin Expositor’s Harvest Glory Days Contest. There are public displays at the Providence Bay Village Square and at the Providence Bay sign at the arena as well along lots of hydro poles throughout the village. Many homes are also nicely decorated showing our community spirit for this fun annual contest. We hope that everyone has remembered to register their home, business, church or organization with the Manitoulin Expositor. Make sure that your decorating skills count for Providence Bay. Even though someone’s thievery of some of our community decorations was disheartening; let’s show them that our community is better than that and rally together to show our community pride. As Martin Luther King said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Let’s show our love for Providence Bay.
On September 20, the Grade 8 class from M’Chigeeng’s Lakeview School joined with Manitoulin Streams at the Mindemoya River to help with tree planting along the river banks. They battled through the rain and worked hard to plant the native trees and shrubs that will provide berries for wildlife. They also stopped along the mouth of the river to see the salmon staging as they are ready to spawn. Chi-miigwetch for the help.
Morgen Moggy (nee McDermid) turned 27 on her last birthday. She decided to make a positive change in her life and cut off fifteen inches of her hair and donated it to the cancer society. She says it feels amazing to be able to give back and she hopes that she inspires others to do so as well.
Cheryl Sheppard visited our nation’s capital for some continuing education. While there, she attended the Canadian Tire Centre to watch the Ottawa Senators trounce the Montreal Canadiens 5-1 in some pre-season NHL game action.
Belated happy birthday wishes go out to Naida Prescott who celebrated on September 23 and Crystal Lentir (nee McFarlane) who celebrated on September 25.
The results for the September 26 Monthly Euchre Tournament are as follows: First place went to Linda and Danielle with 75 points; second place was Cal and Lilly with 74 points; third place was a tie between Bill and Betty Jean and Blaine and Pat with 73 points each. The low score of the night went to George and Gayle. Next month’s euchre tournament will be held a week early due to Halloween falling on the last Tuesday of the month. The tournament will be held October 24.
Terry Bryan is visiting from Saskatchewan for the first time in eighteen years. His family is sure happy to have him home. Crystal and Ben Lentir took this opportunity to host an early potluck Thanksgiving dinner on September 30 for the Bryan side of their family. They had a total of 32 guests and even had their cousin David visiting from California. They enjoyed a delicious dinner, karaoke and campfire.
Visitors from England, Tim McFarlane, Maciek Zielinski, Yvonne and Marcus Franceschin, and Lorraine and Stephen Lewis continue to enjoy themselves in our part of the world.
The annual Cattlemen’s Dinner was held again on September 30 at the Providence Bay Community Centre and was very well attended.
The Providence Bay Park has closed down for another season. We hate to see all of our seasonal residents go, but we look forward to their return next year.
Don’t forget about the monthly breakfast at the Curling Club held the first Thursday of each month. This month’s date is October 5.
The Providence Bay Community Centre Board is seeking new members and or volunteers for the upcoming Annual Fowl Supper. The committee will be holding regular meetings on Wednesday, October 4 and again on Wednesday, November 1. Both meetings will take place at 7:30 pm in the Providence Bay Hall and all are welcome to attend. If you require further information, please contact Sarah at the municipal office at 705-377-5726.
