The ol’ Hindman Curling Cup is back in Providence Bay for 2017! Providence Bay won the competition this year and the top team that will be going on the cup is Skip Jack White, Mike White, Mike Johnston and Darren Dewar. Four teams from each club play. One night at each rink and they use a total points system to arrive at the winner. A big thank you goes out to Assiginack CC for their hospitality and for being part of this long running friendly competition. This competition has been going on for more than 60 years.
The result of last week’s ladies curling bonspiel is as follows: 1st Event winners, Sherry Forest, Heather Hall, Sue Whynott, Jill Patterson. Runner up 1st Event, Nancy Leeson, Mae Bowerman, Lori Leeson, Janet Anning. 2nd Event winners, Helen Gordon, Kim Cooper, Irene Callaghan, Ardith Koski. Runner up 2nd Event, Angela Johnston, Bev McDermid, Patti Jo Woods, Lisa White. 3rd Event Winners, Shannon Douin, Andrea Tann, Anna Love, Tammy Groombridge. Runner up 3rd Event, Ellen Holroyd, Nancy Head, Leslie Morin, Judy Mackenzie. Thank you to all the spectators who came out to cheer on their favourite team/s and to all the wonderful volunteers who helped in making this event once again a huge success. And most importantly kudos to all the lady curlers who as always put so much effort into their fantastic costumes and hilarious comedy skits for everyone’s enjoyment.
Cheryl Sheppard is enjoying Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and the Bavaro Beach, the sunshine, the Atlantic Ocean and the 28° sunshiny weather. She’s reported that nothing’s better than swimming up to the bar to have a fancy cocktail before leisurely strolling off for a wonderfully prepared lunch. We’re wondering if she’ll come back since she’s so blissfully happy. Last report she’s off to the Coco Bongo bar for a wild evening. We hope to get a full update when she returns.
According to the Ontario Library Association, 28 percent of Ontarians rely on their local public library for Internet access. Northern Ontario’s 161 public libraries could be at risk of losing their free Internet access if the provincial government decides to cut funding.
Half of Northern Ontario’s small and rural library branches rely on that funding to pay for their Internet connections, according to Rebecca Hunt, head librarian at Temiskaming Shores Public Library. Our little Providence Bay library has three computers offering free Internet which is regularly used by our community elders, students, the unemployed, tourists and people who can’t afford escalating Internet costs. The library is open Tuesday evening 6:30 – 8:30 pm, Wednesday 1 – 3:30 pm and Fridays from 1 – 4:30 pm.
Don’t forget the Curling Club Breakfast Thursday, March 2 beginning at 7 – 9:30 am. Not only a good price but great food, wonderful people and don’t forget it’s all for the good cause of the upkeep of a valuable asset in our community.
