There was an unscheduled power outage on Saturday beginning in some places at 3 pm and was restored around 7 pm. It’s unknown at this time what caused the power outage. Hydro One has also been calling residents to inform that there will be a planned power outage scheduled for Saturday, May 7 from 7 am until 2 pm. Another one is scheduled for Sunday, May 29.

It’s so nice to finally see that most of the snow has gone. There are still some small piles of it on the northern sides of buildings and out in the bush but it looks like for the most part we are done with snow for this winter. Huge sigh of happiness. The smelts have been running and many people are enjoying this annual treat. It seems to be hit or miss depending on who you talk to and the area, but it seems to be winding down now.

We were glad to hear that Harold Kirk who was reported missing on Saturday was found safely. He’s been a constant presence in the community for so long that it didn’t take long for folks to realize that he was gone and send out help. Thank you so much to the police and any volunteers who assisted in finding him.

The rainbow fishing season has opened on the Mindemoya River so there was increased activity and some successful fishermen. What a great pasttime, especially when it provides for a nutritious part of a balanced meal.

Get well wishes go out to Sally Miller. We wish her a speedy recovery after her recent broken leg. Take care, Sally.

Cheryl Sheppard travelled to Espanola and Sudbury for a 60th birthday party and a stag and doe with her dear old Dad and younger mother. It was a great weekend away.

It is so nice to notice the return of the songbirds to the area. It’s something that you don’t even realize that you miss until you hear it again and then remember the joy it brings.

Happy Birthday wishes go out Brenda McAllister who celebrates on Wednesday, April 27. We can’t say her age but have heard a hint that she has entered the half way mark to a century! Her big sister Mona wishes her an amazing day! Make sure to call, visit or wish her a happy birthday on Facebook.

A reminder going out that Carol Hughes, our Member of Parliament for Algoma–Manitoulin–Kapuskasing, will be having a constituency clinic at the Mindemoya Municipal Office on Wednesday, May 11 from 9 to 10 am. Their offices are often the first stop for people who need help. Members act as “ombudsmen” helping constituents with questions about visas, pension benefits, income tax–anything that is the business of the federal government. If you have any concerns about our village or our beach and surrounding areas and don’t know where to start to get help, visiting Carol might help.

Dawn Young has been continuing her medical treatments in London, Ontario with her family by her side. The costs to the family of transplant patients can be insurmountable. Fundraising efforts remain ongoing. There will be a benefit spaghetti dinner held for Dawn Young on Thursday, May 12, 2016 from 5 to 7 pm at the Providence Bay Hall. Dinner includes: spaghetti, garlic bread, drink and dessert. Dinner is $10 per plate, $5 for children 5-10 years old. Tickets are available at Loco Beanz in Gore Bay or from Joanna Noble, Tina Tolsma, or Matt Young. Tickets will also be available at the door. It’s always good for organizers to know in advance of the number of people who plan on attending so please purchase in advance if possible.
