Winners of the monthly euchre tournament held at the Providence Bay Seniors Twilight Club on June 28 were as follows: 1st place, Bernice and Donna with 91 points; 2nd place, Sally and Kal with 81 points; 3rd place, Bill and Brad with 79 points; and 4th place went to Janet and Mary with 76. The winner of the most lone hands went 1st place to Bernice and Donna with a whopping nine loners (which explains their first place score as well) and second for lone hands went to Sally and Kal. Low hand skunk was won by Linda and Danielle. Bill and Brad were the winners of the door prize. Just a reminder to everyone that there will not be any weekly euchre nights held until September. The monthly euchre tournament will continue to be held the last Tuesday of each month. So the next tournament being held in July will be on the 26th.

Sally Miller is now cast free after 10 long weeks and had some cousins visiting from across the pond. Visitors Andy and eighteen year old Brandon Weller were here visiting from the town of Crawley in West Sussex, United Kingdom. This was just one of their stops in Canada and they will carry on to Stratford once leaving our beautiful island.
Kerry Barclay nee Cranston was home for the long weekend visiting husband Steve. She enjoyed many outings with her sister and Mom Shirley.
The long weekend had many people come to the village to celebrate Canada Day with us even with the inclement weather that started out the day. The Spring Bay/Providence Bay Lions Club held their annual yard sale both on Friday and Saturday. It was a success again thanks to the many volunteers. The activities on the beach were well attended. The free cake and lemonade that was donated by the Central Manitoulin Lions Cub was a hit. Thank you for the donation. The family dance was a huge success. The kids had a blast! The music that was held down at the Discovery Centre was great and had everyone tapping their toes. The fireworks had to be cancelled this year due to the complete fire ban in place for the township. We can’t wait to find out when they’re rescheduled to.
The Mutchmor held their grand opening on July 1 as well. The festivities began at 11 am with food platters and cake. There was live music and had over 300 people in attendance. The owners Matthew Garniss and girlfriend Bridgette honoured Audrey ‘Toots’ McDermid with the task of cutting the ribbon on the new venture. Toots is the former owner of the McDermid’s Home Hardware that the Mutchmor is now housed in. Having this special lady do it could not have been more perfect.

Many people have been complaining about the condition of the beach. In fact there have been many letters written to this very paper. Complaints have been made to the township with little if any results being noticed. People are confused as to where the next step is. How do we get our beach cleaned while protecting endangered species in the environment. I think that everyone is in agreement that protection is important but we want our beach back. Other communities have been able to successfully clean their beach areas while protecting natural habitat. Does anyone know what the next steps would be?
The monthly Providence Bay Curling Club breakfast will be held on Thursday, July 7. This is an amazing breakfast buffet that runs from 7-9:30 am. The cost is $10 for scrambled eggs, pancakes, hash browns, sausage or bacon or peameal, toast, fruit salad and coffee or tea. Come on out and help support the curling club.
The Central Manitoulin Public Libraries has some programs starting for the summer. At the Providence Bay Library there will be a Children’s Story Hour every Friday at 2 pm during the months of July and August. The first Story hour will be held on Friday, July 8 at 2 pm. Also on Tuesdays at the Mindemoya Library there will be a Children’s Fun Time at 11 am during the months of July and August. The first Fun Time will be held Tuesday, July 5 and all children, all ages will be doing a special project: card making. Come and learn how to make lovely cards. Central Manitoulin Public Libraries also has a table at the Mindemoya Farmers’ Market selling books, DVDs, talking books, etc. Everything is three for $1 or $0.50. Come out and support your local library.
Work continues on the Providence Bay Village Square. The sign posts have been installed. The village square sign will soon be up. We can’t wait to see it. Volunteers are welcome to join a core group of workers every Saturday morning at 10 am (rain date on Sundays). Special work bees will be organized throughout the summer to complete a specific phase of the project. The next work bee will be on July 9 to finish preparing and mulching the planting beds and leveling/raking the areas for grass seeding. Bring garden rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows. A reminder to all gardeners, that any donations of perennial plants and/or shrubs are most gratefully accepted. Either bring them to 5252 Hwy 551 (blue house on the main street in Prov) and plant them temporarily in the driveway nursery garden or bring them to the Square later in August when a specific work bee will be held for planting. A huge thank you goes out to all those who have donated time, energy, materials and funds to make this beautification project a reality. It is truly a community effort.
The annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event is being held for the Municipality of Central Manitoulin on Saturday, July 9 from 1 to 4 pm at the Mindemoya Roads Building.
