Cynthia Tilley (daughter of Anna and Mike Neill) was home with friend Craig from London. They were joined by Chad and Maley from Chelmsford for the weekend. Cynthia has accepted a position with Toyota starting June 27. Congratulations Cynthia. Other visitors to the community were Randy and Helen Meyers who are old neighbours of Ingrid Blay.
Many community members were out enjoying activities that were going on Father’s Day weekend. There was the Pearson Cup softball tournament and the Blizzard Open Golf Tournament, a fundraiser to support the Manitoulin Health Centre. Both were held in Mindemoya.
The water barrels are full at the ‘Welcome to Providence Bay’ signs thanks to John Reid. The watering cans have been left out for anyone passing by that wants to take a moment to stop and give the flowers a drink.
The first cut of haying season has been started by area farmers, just in time for the longest day of the year that occurred on the summer solstice on June 20. This is the longest day of the year with the sunrise in our area being at 5:39 am and sunset being at 9:22 pm giving us almost 16 hours of daylight. Our days will start seeming shorter soon. This year, the full moon also coincided with the summer solstice.
Birthday wishes go out to Steve Barclay on June 18. He’s up visiting his summer home. Kerri hasn’t retired yet she’s still slaving away in the city. We also wish Happy Birthday to Derek Stephens who celebrates on the 26th and John Payette who celebrates on the 27th of June.
The Manitoulin Dirt Riders Association (MIDRA) will be hosting motocross races on June 25-26, 2016. Dirt bikes and quads are both welcome. The event is open to riders registered with MIDRA but also to spectators for a nominal fee. The races begin at 8 am on June 25. They have a Facebook page if you have any questions.
The Providence Bay Village Square will be getting more work done as they continue with the tree planting and mulch spreading. The parking spaces will soon be clearly marked.
The monthly euchre tournament hosted by the Providence Bay Seniors Twilight Club will be held on Tuesday, June 28 beginning at 8 pm. The cost is $5 and you need a partner to join. This is a small price to pay for a fun evening of playing cards with a light lunch following. The weekly euchre games will not be held over the summer months but will resume in the fall. The monthly tournament held on the last Tuesday of the month will continue though. We hope to see you out there.
The Providence Bay/Spring Bay Lions Club Annual Yard Sale is being held on Saturday, July 2 from 9 am to 3 pm. If you’ve done your spring cleaning and still have things hanging around that you could donate, please drop your things off at Matt Young’s, 5271 Mira St (Hwy 551).
