The monthly euchre tournament was held again at the Providence Bay Seniors Twilight Club, which is in the basement of the Providence Bay Centennial Hall. This tournament is held the last Tuesday of every month. The February winners were 1st place, Deanie and Marcel; 2nd place, Jim and Elwood; 3rd place, Peter and Bill; and 4th place, Lois and Ted. The low hand went to Irene and Carol while the lone hand went to Deanie and Marcel. Congratulations teams!
The renovations to the Providence Bay Centennial Hall are coming along nicely. The first coat of paint is on in the kitchen and the bar room has its’ final coat of mud. The cupboards were expected Monday, February 29 and should be ready to install this coming weekend. Thank you to Crystal Lentir, Bonnie McFarland and Dennis Mcfarland. Also thanks to the contractors and everyone else involved.

Also not only do we have new books, computers, printers, fax machine and a colour photocopier at the Providence Bay Library, but during the March Break we are having Story Hour on Wednesday, March 16 at 2 pm and also on Friday, March 18 at 2 pm.

We had a long road trip in Florida and Alabama. We started in Pensacola and rented a car to drive to Helmut and Brune’s winter home in Foley, Alabama. We arrived at the tail end of Mardi Gras, beads and the like all around, went to Gulf Shores to the Grand Hotel and Fairhope and back to Foley. Then a long day to Port Richie and a visit with the Burkes. Again we were treated to wonderful tours to Tarpon Springs and sponge harvesting, Busch Gardens, a Valentine’s Day dance complete with a rousing rendition of O Canada, and trips to some beaches. Next came another long drive to Naples to visit my sister, followed by a long drive back up the Atlantic side, via Alligator Alley, to a long lost friend of Janet’s whom she had not seen since Grade 5 in Wawa. Then a long drive back to Pensacola and home. The Burkes and the Wills send greetings to all their friends back in the frozen North.
There was a goose. A goose on the loose! A snow goose was spotted hanging around the Providence Bay Centennial Hall. It drew a lot of attention as people stopped by to see it, feed it and take pictures. The goose was last seen walking up Mutchmor Street with some fans following: one of them was holding a pail of grain and the other a net.
Some tapped maple trees have been running. Of course, there was a mild spell and things have frozen up again so it will slow down again. This is a good reminder though to start preparations for tapping because it might be time with the next warming temperatures. There are some syrup producers around the Barrie are that are already boiling maple syrup and this is the first time in 112 years that they have boiled in February. It’s sure nice seeing the days getting longer and with the upcoming daylight savings time change on March 13 the sunset time will change from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. It will make the days seem even longer. It’s hard to believe that it’s only 18 more days until spring.
Don’t forget about the monthly curling club breakfast. It’s being held tomorrow, March 3, 2016. We hear that people from all around the Island come to try out the tasty breakfast. It’s a great destination for a wonderful breakfast whether you drive the highways or take the OFSC trails. Just make sure you’re there before 9 am or you might just get leftovers.
