Old man winter is sure having his way with us now. Between deep freezes and record snowfalls, there’s no denying that we are right in the middle of it. The bay was still open and steaming like crazy with the frigid temperatures but now it’s looking like a giant slushy.
The snow banks are piled high making it difficult to see around corners. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the snowplow operators for heading out plowing at all times of the day to ensure that the rest of us can safely make it to work, appointments, shopping or just out to enjoy the winter wonderland.
Bryan Morgan of Peterborough was home again to visit his Mom Sandy who had eye surgery and appreciated his driving and the other help he was able to offer.
Happy Birthday wishes go out to Cheryl Sheppard who celebrates turning the big 5-0 on February 2, also Groundhog Day. It will be interesting to see what our prognosticators have to say this year.
Plan to head out to Hartley Sideroad on Saturday, February 2 and watch the 2nd Annual Manitoulin Snow Drags beginning at 8 am. Admission is only $5 for anyone over the age of 10. Racer fees are $20 for the first race and $15 for each subsequent race. Races will be on four lanes of packed snow 660 ft long. There’s a category for almost every sled. Come on out and enjoy some good old Canadian winter fun.
Our hours of daylight are getting longer each day. It’s nice to see. And we are being gifted with some amazing and colourful sunrises and sunsets. Some local photographers are getting some beautiful pictures. The shoreline at the beach and near the marina are also providing really interesting winter landscapes for pictures. Just make sure to bundle up if you decide to head out.
If any local pet owners are interested in getting their fur babies microchipped, now is your chance. Manitoulin Pet Rescue is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, February 9. It’s in Mindemoya and definitely worth it. For more information give Julie McDermid a call at 705-377-4800.
The Providence Bay Ladies Bonspiel will be coming up February 15-17. The theme this year is “Back to the ‘60s.” Contact Nancy Head at 705-377-5225 for more details or to register your team. The cost is $200 per team for a fantastic weekend of ladies’ fun at the Providence Bay Curling Club.
