Well now that we’ve had the first day of summer and the longest day of the year, we’re actually getting summery weather. What a blessing. Many people have been out enjoying the beach, the boardwalk and the weekly farmers’ market at the Harbour Centre.
Sharlene Sullivan was home to visit with her valet Harry, driving her to visit their friends and old neighbours from Harry’s days of living in our village.
Sherry and Greg McFarlane were down from Elliott Lake enjoying their summer home in Providence Bay.
Happy Belated birthday wishes go out to six-year-old Ayriss Noble-Stone who celebrated on June 23. She had a fun birthday party with lots of family and friends visiting.
Happy birthday wishes are being sent out to Derek Stephens who celebrates on June 26. Happy birthday also goes out to former resident John Payette who celebrates June 27 and to Ray Smith who celebrates June 28.
The Discovery Centre will be opening their doors for their summer hours beginning Saturday, June 29 at 10:30 am. They will be open every day after that until September 1 from 10:30 am to 7 pm. Come on down to the Harbour Centre and visit them inside to see their exhibits and find out what fun activities are planned for the summer.
The Providence Bay/Spring Bay Lions Club Annual Canada Day Yard Sale has added an extra day. This fundraising event will be held in the Village Square on Saturday June 29, 30 and Monday, July 1. For all of you hunters out there, the deadline for the antlerless deer draw is quickly approaching. Applications can be done online by Sunday, June 30 for the 2019 hunting season. Just Google ‘antlerless deer draw.’
Ontario Family Fishing Events is a province-wide opportunity for Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters without the mandatory fishing-version outdoors card. Family fishing week begins June 29 and goes until July 7. There has never been a better time to introduce someone to fishing. Ontario fishing regulations and limits continue to apply during licence-free days. Make sure you know what they are before heading out.
The Municipality of Central Manitoulin proudly presents the Summer Fun Program 2019 starting Tuesday, July 2, Mondays to Fridays, 10 am to 4 pm. Open to school age children. Activities will be held at the Providence Bay Arena or at the Providence Bay Community Centre. Please join them for: arts and crafts, indoor games, outside activities, lunch, snack, friends and fun! (A small fee is required for lunch and snacks.) For further details please call the Municipal Office at 705-377-5726.
Did you know that on April 8, 1961 a young man that lived in Providence Bay by the name of John Hill was presented with a certificate from the Royal Canadian Humane Association for his heroic action and presence of mind in the rescue of William E. Sagle from his burning house? Mr. Sagle presented John with the certificate. Betty Beaudin, a sister of Mr. Sagle, read the citation. The fire completely destroyed the home. Mr. Hill found his way through the smoke filled house to his bedroom where Mr. Sagle, a 70-year-old bachelor, lay on his bed dazed and confused from shock and smoke. John is the son of Herb and Aleda Hill also of Providence Bay.
