LITTLE CURRENT – Tomorrow afternoon, Thursday, August 27, at The Expositor Office’s Print Shop Books bookstore in downtown Little Current, Wiikwemkoong author Karen Pheasant-Neganigwane will be on-hand to sign copies of her new book, ‘Powwow: A Celebration through Song and Dance,’ which was released early this year and has already entered its second printing.
While the book takes a national look at powwow culture, Ms. Pheasant-Neganigwane, who has lived in Alberta for the last number of years, said “it was only fitting that the first event for her book be held on Mnidoo Mnising as it contains references and photos of so many local people, from Stan Osawamick, Autumn Peltier, Lisa Lavallee and many more.”
Ms. Pheasant-Neganigwane says her book is not only written for non-Indigenous audiences; rather, the author says there are many Indigenous people across Turtle Island who have not been able to grow up with their own cultures and encourages all to come to the Thursday event.
The event will begin outside of The Expositor Office at 4 pm with an author meet and greet and early book signing. Music and sound will be provided by Leslie Neshkiwe.
Dr. Jeannette Corbiere-Lavell will offer introductions followed by a welcoming prayer by Ms. Pheasant-Neganigwane’s mother, Rosemary Lavallee. A song and healing dance will then take place.
At 4:45 pm, Ms. Pheasant-Neganigwane will read from her book and introduce her work. Door prize tickets will be handed out.
Following the readings, at 5:15pm, Ms. Pheasant-Neganigwane will host a question and answer session from the audience. The event will continue with refreshments and more book signing.
Door prizes will be drawn at 5:45 pm with the event wrapping up at 6 pm.
The Expositor asks that all those attending the event please wear a mask and maintain physical distance. This will be an outdoor event (weather permitting) so please bring a lawn chair.
