Manitoulin’s first trail has been joined by a number of outstanding hiking opportunities

I am very glad to hear that the Cup and Saucer Trail, which has long been neglected, is getting cleaned up by the Wikwemikong trail crew. Back in the 1970s, I believe it was the first public hiking trail on the Island. At the time it was the only drawing card here for people who liked hiking. Gravel quarries have eaten away at the foot of the “mountain” and made for a noisy beginning to the hike on weekdays. Meanwhile, newer trails have been developed that now fully deserve recognition as pre-eminent here, namely Bebamikawe, Misery Bay and Nimkee Trail. For those who prefer short hikes, Lewis Twin Peaks, Bridal Veil Falls, the Mississagi Lighthouse trail, the Bowerman Trail and the M’Chigeeng trail (now reopened) are all lovely. I hope the importance of these trails to Manitoulin tourism will be recognized by the powers that be and that they will be maintained and preserved in their natural state. I hope Islanders will explore our many trails this summer, they’ll be surprised. I can’t wait to explore Wikwemikong’s new Point Grondine Park Trail!
