SHEGUIANDAH—In light of a spate of recent break and enters and thefts in the village of Sheguiandah, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be hosting a community crime prevention program at the Howland Seniors’ Hall in Sheguiandah later this month.
Community Services Officer (CSO) Constable Marie Ford explained that, following the recent article highlighting the Sheguiandah crime, Auxiliary Constable Brian Boyd, formerly of Little Current (and son of retired CSO Al Boyd) reached out to Constable Ford and suggested he present the Safeguard Ontario Property Security Program to the community, a program in which he is trained.
Constable Ford noted that there have been no further occurrences in Sheguiandah to date but the community was chosen as a good place to offer the program, which is open to anyone who would like to attend.
“Safeguard Ontario is a community-based crime prevention program developed to help citizens ‘lock criminals out of house and home’,” Constable Ford told The Expositor. “It also gives the public a chance to see what auxiliary constables do and have a chat with them.”
“It can happen to anyone,” Constable Ford said of crime. “If we can give people the tools, we’re maybe one step ahead.”
The Safeguard Ontario Property Security Program will be held on Monday, May 28 at 7 pm at the Howland Seniors’ Hall in Sheguiandah.
