Council approves new sidewalk
The Northeast Town council carried a motion to support a recommendation from the Community Services and Public Works Committee for the construction of a new sidewalk in town.
The sidewalk will be built on the west side of Worthington Street from Draper Street to Blake Street at a cost of $24,675 plus HST to be taken from the sidewalk reserve account.
Town closes sidewalk as part of PanAm Torch event
Council carried a motion to support a recommendation from the Community Services and Public Works Committee, authorizing the closure of Water Street from The Expositor Square to the Anchor Inn as well as the Little Current Post Office parking lot from 7 am to 7:30 pm on June 2 as part of the municipality’s PamAm Torch relay event.
Council awards drain tender
The Northeast Town council reviewed the tenders received for part one of the Howland Drain No. 3 construction. Town CAO Dave Williamson explained that Denis Gratton Construction came in at $197,173.50, while Ferguson’s Aggregate and Construction came in at $64,600.
“The difference in price is dramatic,” said Mr. Williamson. “Our engineer reviewed both tenders and is recommending Ferguson’s as they came in 10 percent lower than the engineer estimated.”
“I’m pleased to see two bids on this project,” said Councillor Michael Erskine, “and it is really nice to see a local company.”
Council carried a motion, moved by Councillor Bill Koehler and seconded by Councillor Paul Skippen, to accept the tender from Ferguson’s Aggregate and Construction for part one of Howland Drain No. 3 for $64,600.
Town signs four-year agreement with Wally’s Dock Service
Council reviewed the municipality’s agreement with Wally’s Dock Service (for the use of the town dock in front of his business) and based on town staff’s recommendation, approved an agreement between Wally’s and the town for four years with annual two percent increases, instead of reviewing it annually.
Council asks planning board support in leaving board
After learning that the Northeast Town council’s request had been denied to have the Manitoulin Planning Board (MPB) change the weighted voting model to a model based on municipal contribution, council carried a motion requesting that the MPB support the Northeast Town in leaving the planning board.
Manitoulin Fine Arts Association receives donation
After reviewing a letter from the Manitoulin Fine Arts Association (MFAA) requesting a donation for the organization’s 21st Manitoulin Art Tour, council carried a motion to donate $200.
Hornepayne asks for support
The Northeast Town supported a resolution from the Township of Hornepayne calling on Premier Wynne and the Province of Ontario to “take immediate action to prevent hydro rate increases from being implemented.”
