QUEEN’S PARK—Newly elected Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha has announced he will be introducing a private member’s bill to remove the tax from home heating bills when provincial legislature resumes next week.

Mr. Mantha made the announcement at Queen’s Park on Monday, November 14, while flanked by party leader Andrea Horwath.

“People feel like they’re falling behind and we’re ready to tackle the challenges they’re facing,” said Ms. Horwath. “As we head into the first legislative session you’ll be hearing from New Democrats offering effective achievable solutions to make life better for families.” Mr. Mantha said the bill, if successfully passed, would save Ontario families up to roughly $100 a year.

“Families in my riding, and across Ontario, are finding it hard to make ends meet,” Mr. Mantha said. “Energy costs are climbing fast enough without adding an unfair tax. Taking the HST off home heating will make life more affordable and put more money into household budgets and the local economy.”

The HST exemption would apply to home heating costs for natural gas and oil. Hydro would not be exempt. Private members’ bills are introduced by MPPs, rather than the political party.
