NDP demands premier stop service cuts

SAULT STE. MARIE—During the provincial government’s pre-budget consultations in Sault Ste. Marie last week, Ontario NDP finance and treasury board critic Catherine Fife and Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha demanded that the premier listen to people in Northern Ontario who are calling on the Liberal government to stop cuts to public services families depend on, to invest in job creation, and to stop the sell-off of Hydro One.

“Premier (Kathleen) Wynne needs to start listening to people in Northern Ontario who are telling her to stop the Liberal’s cuts to health care and education, to put the brakes on the fire sale of Hydro One, and to begin investing in the creation of good family-supporting jobs,” Ms. Fife said in a release.

The provincial government held its pre-budget public consultations in Sault Ste. Marie on January 21. This all-party committee will be hearing from Ontarians across the province on the 2016 budget.

Mr. Mantha, the NDP’s critic for Northern Development and Mines said, “today, people from across Northern Ontario were loud and clear: this Liberal government has lost sight of what really matters to families. Here, and across the province, families are having a hard enough time making ends meet without having to worry about skyrocketing electricity prices and where their next pay cheque is coming from.”

“Northerners are telling this government to get its fundamentals right, to invest in the public services that families and communities need in hospitals and schools, and to get started on a responsible job creation strategy,” added Mr. Mantha.
