Murder charge laid in Wikwemikong

45-year-old Frank Osawamick found dead Sunday

WIKWEMIKONG—Tragedy has struck the community of Wikwemikong with news of the untimely death of 45-year-old Frank Osawamick, a husband and father, allegedly at the hands of 48-year-old Julius Trudeau who has been charged with second degree murder.

On Sunday afternoon, February 28, Wikwemikong Tribal Police were alerted to the body of Mr. Osawamick at a Wikwemikong Way apartment complex located adjacent to the Wikwemikong Nursing Home. As of press time Monday, it was not known to whom the apartment where Mr. Osawamick’s body was found belongs. Unconfirmed reports state that Mr. Osawamick had been stabbed.

Mr. Osawamick and Mr. Trudeau were acquaintances, police confirmed.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North East Region Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Services Unit (FISU), under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) Acting Detective Inspector Mark Zulinski were asked to assist the Tribal Police.

As a result of the investigation, Mr. Trudeau, age 48 of Wikwemikong, has been charged with Second Degree Murder contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

Mr. Trudeau appeared in bail court on Monday and has been ordered held in custody until his next court appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on March 10.
