M’CHIGEENG—Four Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) students placed in the top three in their divisions at the Rainbow District School Board (RDSB) annual technological skills competition.
RDSB hosted its 10th annual technological skills competition at Cambrian College on March 2. Over 120 secondary school students tested their skills in events such as carpentry, welding, TV/video editing, photography, auto-service technology, prepared speech, 2D character animation, cabinet making and small-powered equipment. Students were vying for an opportunity to compete in the provincial skills competition in Waterloo this May.
Cole Corbiere of MSS was first in the carpentry-individual division. MSS students Jonah Kennedy and Eric Orford were first and third, respectively, in the small-powered equipment division, while Tristan Golder of MSS placed second in the auto-service technology division,
“Once again, the technological skills competition was a success,” said Leo Leclair, specialist high skills major (SHSM), program co-ordinator for RDSB. “The competition is a fantastic way for students to be exposed to the many viable career options in the trades.”
“On behalf of Rainbow District School Board, I would like to congratulate all students who participated in this year’s competition,” said board chair Doreen Dewar. “We wish all students competing at the provincial level continued success.”
Winners and participants took home a number of wonderful prizes thanks to the support of community businesses and organizations, including the Sudbury and Manitoulin Workforce Planning Board, Northeastern Ontario Construction Association (NOCA) and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), among many others.
