Exams are finally over. Students wrote exams, starting on Thursday, January 25 to Tuesday, January 30. Exams are always stressful for students and staff alike, so Students’ Council arranged pyjama day on Monday, January 22; anti-stress colouring on Wednesday, January 24; and on Monday and Wednesday, there was free hot chocolate. Several students at MSS used badminton and basketball as relaxation methods. Now that exam week is over, students can prepare for their second semester courses and restock school supplies.
Semester 2 brings a fresh start for everybody. Mr. Scott, the long-time English and drama teacher at MSS, has retired. Mr. Scott has directed many recent school musicals, including ‘Anything Goes,’ ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,’ ‘Oklahoma,’ and ‘Once Upon a Mattress.’ The school won’t be the same without him. The 2018 production of ‘The Sound of Music’ will be Mr. Scott’s last musical at MSS. The full-scale production of the Broadway classic musical runs from February 15-17 at 7 pm each evening. Tickets can be purchased in advance at IDA in Gore Bay or Guardian Pharmacies in Little Current, Mindemoya and Manitowaning or at the door ($16 individual or $50 for families of 2 adults and minor children).
Grade 12 student Kendra Jordison said, “Mr. Scott is a very energetic person who knows how to engage his audience. I have had him as both a teacher and a director, and enjoyed him as both. I wish him luck in the next phase of his life.”
In their first year, the Manitoulin Metal Robotics Team is busy at work getting ready for the competition season. The team is sponsored by FIRST Robotics Canada, Microsoft, RBC and TD Banks. Organized by FIRST Robotics, teams around the world are challenged to build a Robot that can operate autonomously via programming and by remote control to complete a series of challenges. This year the competition is called FIRST PowerUp. The MSS team is designing and constructing the robot and will compete at a huge event at Georgian College on March 3-4 and again in North Bay on March 29-31.
Ready to power through second semester, the students and staff of MSS are being positive and working hard for a great start. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
