The end of the year is approaching quickly and there are lots of end of year activities happening. The graduation ceremony took place on Thursday, June 8. At 7 pm family members and friends of the graduates gathered in the MSS gymnasium to watch the 2017 graduates walk across the stage. The graduates paraded into the gym, donned in robes and caps as Benjamin MacDonald played the bagpipes. Sabrina Bondi led the graduates, staff members and community members in the singing of O Canada. The Valedictorian, Yohana Ogbamichael presented her speech, showing the audience how to take a great selfie. Yohana ended her speech with these inspirational words, “We made it to graduation, and we will make it through so much more in life, so learn for your mistakes and enjoy doing the things that you love. I look forward to what the future has planned for us. I wish you all the best. And if times get tough, you have family who will always be by your side, a community that will support you, and, of course, friends who will encourage you for the rest of your life.” Following the graduation ceremony, graduates took photos and enjoyed refreshments.
After the graduation, students attended Prom. The theme of the dance was Gatsby black and gold: “A little party never killed anybody.” The Prom committee put in a lot of work decorating and making the event memorable. The event was DJed by Blake Debassige. Isaac Gosse took pictures of couples, friends, and groups dancing.
On Friday, June 9, the award winning Wikwemikong High School robotics team visited MSS to demonstrate their competition and practice robots and gave MSS students and staff the opportunity to learn about their team. Mr. Chris Mara, coach of the WHS Robotics team, said, “The TMC Robotics mandate is promoting mathematics and programming on Manitoulin and we want to encourage a team for robotics at MSS.” There will be a meeting before the end of the school year to see how many people are interested in participating in this new club. Mr. Balfe, Mr. Becks, Ms. Bauer and Mr. Davy have all expressed interest in starting a first robotics club at MSS next year. Positions include social media, marketing/communication, public relations, event planners, builders, drivers, video gamers and computer programming. Mr. Davy said, “This club is oooh sooo much more than robots.”
The Mustangs are looking to the future as the school year reaches its end. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
