The MSS Mustangs are now in their last month of school but there is still lots happening at the school.
The MSS track and field team travelled to Laurentian University for NOSSA on Wednesday, May 24 to Thursday May 25. The team had to compete in wet and rainy conditions, but coach Mr. Balfe said, “The team performed exceptionally well, especially with the poor conditions.” The Mustangs who competed at NOSSA were James Scott, Marjorie Scott, Marshall Maciuk, Mackenzie Cortes, Yohana Ogbamichael, Douglas Robinson, Austin Purvis, Elizabeth Wood, Nicole Boyle, Alex Smith, Gabby Corbiere, Matt Redmond, and Beth Wiwchar. They competed in the various track and field events. Marjorie Scott placed in the top 10 for midget girls’ triple jump, Matt Redmond placed in the top 10 for intermediate boys’ discus throw and shotput, and James Scott placed 1st in both of his 800m and 1500m races. MSS wishes James luck as he moves on to OFSAA in Belleville on June 1-3.
SHARE/Go Green hosted a Me to We workshop, Give Where We Live, on May 25. Two facilitators visited MSS for a two-hour after school program. Denver Leeson, Josh Noble and I spent two hours learning about how to get more students involved in extracurriculars and clubs at MSS. The group was supported by Ms. Bauer, Ms. Wilson, Ms. Jones and had many great ideas for the future.
Relay for Life is on June 2, and the committee is busy pulling the final parts of the event together. Relay for Life will include a Survivor’s Feast, Survivor’s lap, the Luminary Ceremony, all-night music, a tent decorating contest, the all-night walking relay, games, movies, and many more fun activities. SHARE will be running canteen from 5 pm to 5 am selling snacks with all proceeds going to charity. In order to participate, members had to raise $100 to put towards their team. Each team then had to raise a minimum of $1,000 in pledges. The goal of the event is to raise $30,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. All the proceeds from the event will be going towards finding a cure for cancer.
The Prom Committee is selling tickets for the year-end dance, planned for Thursday, June 8 from 9 pm to 12 am. The dance will start at the end of the graduation ceremony, so that the graduates of 2017 can dance with their friends and celebrate their success. The theme of prom this year is “Black and Gold,” giving the dance a sophisticate angle. Tickets are $10 a person or $15 a couple.
The MSS Mustangs are getting ready to end the year, but they aren’t slowing down for anything. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
