AUNDECK OMNI KANING—Mnaamodzawin Health Services has been supporting elders and shut-ins in the five smaller Indigenous communities they serve on Manitoulin by delivering delicious home-cooked meals through a Meals on Wheels-style program.
Up until recently, the program has been something of an ad-hoc operation, notes executive director Craig Abotossaway, with the cooking being done in the staff kitchen in-house. But now, thanks to funding provided through Indigenous Services Canada and its First Nations/Inuit health branch, Mnaamodzawin has been able to upgrade the kitchen facilities to commercial-grade and hire two trained chefs to prepare the meals.
“This has allowed us to better serve the elders in our five communities, Sheguiandah, Whitefish River, Aundeck Omni Kaning, Sheshegwaning and Zhiibaahaasing,” shared Mr. Abotossaway. “Our staff has always done a great job, but these improvements will allow us to do serve even better.”
