The first regular meeting of the MHC Auxiliary was held on Tuesday, January 8. Dave Sylvester chaired the meeting. An air of mixed emotions was evident as we had a time of reflection to remember the passing of an active member, Doris Schwar. Doris was eager to participate and showed that she cared deeply for others. She was an important link in several activities and a voice of reason. We also had much to celebrate as we considered the success of our latest fundraisers and other beneficial developments.

Firstly, Dave Sylvester introduced us to two new members, Tim Vine and Crystal. These two new active members are certain to be an asset to the auxiliary and will help us to continue to fulfill our mandate to provide patient services any way we can in conjunction with the Manitoulin Health Centre.

Secondly, Karl Cheung, coordinator of the “Bakeless” Bake Sale reported that sales were super! The equivalent of 417 dozen cookies or 333 dozen muffins or 278 pies were sold! Fantastic job, Karl and helpers. Thank you for your support in making it a phenomenal success.

Thirdly, we bought three pieces of equipment. Monies from the general account, HELPP Lottery, In Memoriam Fund and raffle account were used to buy a non-stress test machine, an IV triple pump and a vital signs machine. All equipment is for the nursing floor for direct patient services.

Other good news included a Christmas card with a cheque enclosed from the Family Health Team. Thank you for your support.

The sale of ornaments for the Memory Tree was a moderate success.

Coming events were planned. These include a book\jigsaw puzzle sale and the annual casserole dinner.

Manitoulin Health Centre Auxiliary Past President Dave Sylvester presents one of two auxiliary graduation bursaries to his granddaughter Kendra Jordison. Nekoma Naokwegjig was the recipient of the second award presented by the auxiliary to students continuing their post secondary education in a health related field.

The Book Sale will be held in the cafeteria at the Manitoulin Health Centre on Friday, February 1 (5-8 pm) and Saturday, February 2 (9 am-2 pm). If you have books or puzzles to donate please do so before January 30. Call Laila for more information (705-368-2580).

The casserole dinner will be held in the hall at the United Church in Little Current on Friday, March 15 at 6 pm. The cost remains at $10 per ticket. Buy your tickets in advance from members Doug’s Barber Shop or Sue Lafreniere. If you would like to donate a casserole, call Sue at 705-368-2336. This is the best dinner in town!

As stated, we remembered Doris at the beginning of the meeting. We acknowledge that with the passing of two active members, president Elaine Moore and Doris Schwar, there is a gap in our auxiliary. We truly need you to step up and insure the functioning of the MHC Auxiliary in Little Current.

The next regular meeting is on February 12.
