MANITOWANING— Members of the Southeast Manitoulin Lions Club are all smiles this week after pulling off yet another successful Summerfest weekend.
“The weekend was great, the weather was perfect,” enthused Lion President Bill Smith. “On Saturday all kinds of kids attended the games, and milking Maple the cow.”
The president said the Lions were also pleased with the numbers at the annual dance as well as the Sunday smashup derby, which saw over 1,000 people at the fairgrounds to cheer on the drivers. This year the first heat was won by Cole Chisholm; second heat, Kevin Parkinson; third heat, Derrick Leeson; Winners Round, Kevin Parkinson; and Consolation Prize, Zack Burnett. Best hand painted car went to Cody Mackenzie and spray painted car honours went to Isaac Sloss.

“This year the amount of cars were down with 13—there are normally between 20 and 25 cars so a little less than half,” Lion Bill said, thanking all the sponsors and the volunteer fire department for helping to make Summerfest possible.
In the parade with the theme of ‘Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Flag,’ Melanie Holmes and Jamie Hughson came first; the Red Hats, second; Uncle Steve’s, third; and Best representing Canada, the Janice Bowerman family.
“It was a success overall,” Lion Bill concluded.
