MANITOULIN—They truly are amazing!
The Manitoulin Special Olympics (MSO) team of athletes have once again dominated a competition, bringing home a staggering 44 medals from the provincial track and field and golf events held this past week.
“Our athletes and teams did awesome, of course,” stated Janet Anning, coordinator and coach of the MSO team. She pointed out MSO athletes garnered 17 gold medals, 16 silver medals and 11 bronze medals. “All of the athletes (part of the Region 9 team) posted personal best times and results in the track and field events as did the golfers.” As well, other members of the Region 9 team accumulated another 41 medals.
“Jeff Panamick (MSO) was in the top eight, for instance, among 73 golfers in the golf tournament,” said Ms. Anning. “Austin Featherstone was another good example of our team’s success, as he won three gold and three silver medals in track and field. Everyone did amazing.” Tyler Madahbee garnered a silver medal in golf, competing among 73 golfers in total.
Austin Featherstone was first in his 400 metre run category. He secured a gold medal in the 800-metre run and 1,500-metre run. He was second in the standing long jump, shot put men-four kilograms and was also on a silver medal winning 4×400-metre relay team.
Dylan Danville won a gold medal in the 100-metre run, 200-metre run, the 400-metre run and in the long jump. He was third in the shot put.
Jamie Pyette brought home a gold medal in the high jump, a bronze medal in the 200-metre run and garnered a silver medal in the long jump. He was second in the shot put and fourth in the 100-metre run.
Randy Corbiere was first in his division in the standing long jump and second in the 400-metre. He finished in sixth place in the 200-metre run. He was third in the shot put and was on a bronze medal winning 4×100-metre relay team.
Mark Dokum won a gold medal in the 200-metre run, was first in the 400-metre run and first in the long jump. He received a bronze medal in the 100-metre run.
Regan Millsap garnered a silver medal in the shot put, brought home a bronze medal in the 100-metre run and was fifth in the 200-metre run.
Andrew Splawnyk was first in the 200-and 400-metre runs, was first in the 800-metre run and first in the shot put. He finished third in the long jump.
Matthew Bedard was first In the high jump in his division, second in the 800-metre run, second in the 1,500-metre run and third in the 200-metre run. He was also on the silver medal winning 4×400 metre relay team.
May Bondy won a gold medal in the standing long jump, was fourth in the 100-metre run and was also on a bronze medal winning 4×100-metre relay team.
Allan Francis won a silver medal in the 400-metre race, had a silver medal in the shot put and was second in the long jump. He garnered a bronze medal in the 200-metre run and won a bronze medal in the high jump.
“I’m sure some of our athletes will be moving on to the nationals taking place in British Columbia next year,” said Ms. Anning.
