M’CHIGEENG—Community members and parents/guardians are invited to ‘Bridges to Inclusiveness,’ an equity event focused on education, entertainment and nourishment at Manitoulin Secondary School. Hosted by the School Council, the event will take place on Thursday, March 20 from 5:30 to 7 pm in the school cafeteria.

While participants feast on local cuisine, four guest speakers will take centre stage to talk about relevant topics aimed at reducing barriers and promoting inclusion. Topics include autism, aboriginal perspectives, mental health challenges and sexual orientation.

“We are truly proud to host this presentation for our students and community members,” says Laurie Zahnow, principal of Manitoulin Secondary School. “This is a time when students are trying to figure out who they are. During this period of growth, it’s imperative that they become aware of supports that are available to help guide them along the way.”

Bridges to Inclusiveness is being made possible thanks to a Ministry of Education Parents Reaching Out Grant and generous contributions from local businesses.

Manitoulin Secondary School’s parenting class will provide free childcare services.

All those who wish to attend and/or contribute a potluck dish for the feast are asked to RSVP by calling Manitoulin Secondary School at 705-368-7000.

This event builds on Rainbow District School Board’s focus on equity and inclusive education, which aims to create and enhance school-based supports for students.
