Halloween is right around the corner, and the Share/Go-Green groups are ready to collect non-perishable food items for their We Scare Hunger campaign. Elementary and secondary school students are invited to collected non-perishable foods for the local food bank while trick or treating. MSS classes are competing to see who can collect the most canned goods to fill the display case. All of the donations will be going to Haven House to help Island families.
MSS will be having a Spooktacular Halloween Dance. The dance is from 7:30 to 10:30 pm on October 30 and there will also be a haunted hallway. It should be super fun, and admission is $10 or $5 and a canned good (in support of WE Scare Hunger). Come to the dance and you can be helping families who need it.
The boys’ hockey team played two games against Central Algoma Secondary School last Saturday and they did amazing. Connor Croft said, “They played really well, and I’m pretty sure they won no problem.” The score for the first game was 8-2 and the second game was 6-4. The supporters in the stands were cheering for their school, and left victorious.
The girls’ basketball team went to Elliot Lake last Tuesday and they played well with a positive attitude despite the aggressive and hard game. The Seniors score was a 35-17 loss and the Juniors lost 42-20. The ride back to Manitoulin was full of music, pep talks for their next game and card games.
The boys’ volleyball teams did exceptionally well, the seniors finishing with two losses, two wins and the juniors finishing with three losses, one win. Both teams have done a great job making it to NSSSA.
The 3 Fires Confederacy will be collecting gently worn winter coats, snowpants, mittens/gloves, scarves and hats of all sizes. 3 Fires Confederacy, MSS and Kina Gbezhgomi are working together to help keep children and families on Manitoulin warm this winter. Donations can be dropped of in MSS in the front foyer starting Friday, October 23 until Monday, November 30. All donations will be donated to Kina Gbezhgomi Child and Family Services on behalf of 3 Fires and MSS.
The MSS musical is underway once again with ‘Once Upon A Mattress.’ The Broadway musical is based on the famous fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea. In this hilarious tweaking of the fairy tale, Queen Aggravain has ruled that none may marry until her son Prince Dauntless marries. However, she has managed to sabotage every princess that comes along until Winnifred enters the kingdom. This year’s musical will star MacKenzie Gilmore as Princess Winnifred, Brad Sayyae as Prince Dauntless, Jessica Jordison as Queen Aggravain, Max Chapman as Sir Harry, Rebecca Dawson as the Jester, Kayla Greenman as Lady Larkin, James Scott as King Sextimus, Alexa Gordon as the Minstrel, and Caroline Glasby as the Wizard.
On October 20 Robb Nash performed at MSS. Robb Nash is nationally known for leaving a promising music career, to travel around Canadian schools, detention centres, and reservations to talk to youth. Robb gives his presentations for no cost. When he was in Grade 12, Robb Nash was in a serious car accident, leaving him dead. He was brought back to life by medical staff and given a second chance. He woke up three months later with steel plates in his head and anger at his helplessness. For the past 16 years, Robb Nash has been helping teens, children, and adults fight off helplessness, depression and suicide. He believes suicide is the biggest issue in our world for people of all ages. After seeing his presentation, students stayed after school, missing their buses so that they could talk to Robb. They connected with him about their own issues, his story, and enjoyed being in the presence of a rockstar and hero.
Cecilia Baumann says, “Although I don’t suffer from suicidal thoughts or practice self harm I found this performance to be inspiring and helpful in other facets of my life. I would totally sit through another of his radical performances. As he says, “It is only for today.” One important message that Robb shared with MSS students is “Don’t wait ‘til you find out you’re dying, before you start living.”
MSS has had an amazing month, and with the musical, sports, fundraisers and spirit days, the next month should be just as fun, making the most of it one day at a time.
