MSS is already having a great year in sports. The boys’ hockey team has been finalized: Matt Craig, Justice Corbiere, Jacob Moreau, Hunter Abotossaway, Ben Haner, Nathan Hovingh, Carter Noble, Thomas Hayden, Alex Smith, Cole King, Tait Wallace, Parker Dickinson, Mason Pine, Dylan Francis, Ronson Odjig, Adam Goodfellow, Patrick Snowden, Brandon Anwhatin and Jordan Cristos. The team won their first game 9-2 against Espanola. Last Saturday, they played two games in Little Current in front of their fans. The team looks strong this year as many of them have played together before.
The junior and senior girls’ basketball teams played against the Central Algoma Huskies on the 13th, the seniors winning with a score of 25-13. The juniors played a very good game and tried their hardest, the final score being 16-25 for the Huskies. The seniors played a second game on Thursday against Blind River, winning 33-16. Mackenzie Turner competed at OFSAA for golf and represented MSS well.
Over 100 parents attended the MSS Parents’ Information Night last Thursday. There was a bake sale to fundraise for the Brick-by-Brick campaign to build a school in Haiti. Students made cupcakes, truffles, cookies, coffee bread, and other treats. Parents and teachers alike were lined up, waiting to get their own treats and help save the world. The total amount of money raised was $280. Carolyn Glasby, a Share Go Green executive member, said, “It went really well, and it was awesome to see so many people donating baking, helping out, and contributing to our Haiti Brick-by-Brick campaign.”
Rebecca Dawson, also a Share Go Green executive, said, “The bake sale was a fantastic event which put us another step closer to reaching our goal of building a school in Haiti. I’m glad I could be a part of the process. Overall it was an awesome event and we were able to reach out to a lot of parents for support.”
Share/Go Green is doing a food drive, We Scare Hunger. On Halloween, teens will be trick-or-treating for non-perishable food items. Community members can also donate non-perishable items by bringing them to MSS. All of the items collected will go to Haven House and support families in need. Island elementary schools have also asked students and parents to donate items, so that they can participate in this great local food drive.
Open auditions for the high school musical ‘Once Upon a Mattress,’ will be available to elementary students Grade 5-8 on Saturday, October 24 from 12- 1 pm. All students in the allotted age group who want to audition are welcome, and are invited to join the group read through following their auditions. The musical is based on the Princess and the Pea. In this comical redo of the show Queen Agrravain stops every woman from marrying her son, Prince Dauntless. That is until Princess Winnifred comes along and she won’t give up. This hilarious show is well on its way to success
On Wednesday, October 14, a group of students went to Espanola High School for a College Information Program. Also on Thursday, a representative from Wilfred Laurier University and from Sault College were at MSS trying to recruit this year’s graduating Grade 12s.
Students and staff of MSS are supporting each other’s goals, whether it is to build a school across the world or to win a hockey game.
