Course selections for next year are due soon and progress reports are coming out, but Mustangs have more exciting things to think about. MSS had a fun-filled week, whether students were being hypnotised or were skating their hearts out during hockey finals.
On Friday, February 26, Robert Maxwell, a well-known hypnotist, was at MSS and put on a jaw-dropping performance for students of MSS who sold magazines during the magazine drive or who took part in the buy-out. Mr. Maxwell had volunteers James Scott, Kristen Mitchell, Carissa Holiday, Liam Leblanc, Victoria Tardif, Nathan Howard, Jackie Cooper, Greg Doane, Mackenzie Gilmore, Marshall Maciuk, Garret Gauthier, Jordanna Dedman, Joel Lovelace and myself undergo hypnosis. The volunteers first were brought to a tropical resort where they saw their favourite celebrities and fixed their hair and makeup to impress them. The audience was laughing the whole time. The rest of the show consisted of Mr. Maxwell making the volunteers dance, show off their muscles, give each other wedgies, and wearing “cool” bandages on their faces for 24 hours. The volunteers all left the stage elated and a little bit fuzzy on the events of the show. Audience member Donnshai Bruleigh said, “The show was really funny. My favourite part was when Greg thought he was the sexiest man alive and was dancing in the audience.”
Also on Friday, students’ council put on the Winter Formal after postponing it in January due to bad weather. Students got to dance with their friends from 7:30 to 10:30 am in the gymnasium, which was decorated with snowflakes, streamers and more to get everyone into a festive mood. The music was played by DJ Scratchley Q. There were lots of students, and everybody looked great in their formal dresses and suits. Isaac Gosse was taking photos of groups of friends and smiling couples.
The next sport season is coming up. Badminton tryouts took place during the past week, and there were lots of students from every grade trying out. The divisions are mixed junior; single girls midget, junior, intermediate and senior; double girls junior and intermediate; single boys midget, junior, intermediate and senior; doubles boys midget, junior, intermediate and senior. This year’s coaches are Mr. Kategiannis and Mr. Robinson. Students who tried out are waiting for the results to be posted.
The girls’ hockey team is playing their second game in a series against Bishop-Carter tonight at the M’Chigeeng arena at 5 pm. The girls hope to win this game after losing to Bishop-Carter in the 1st game of the series 8-6. If the girls win this game they will have a chance to win the league championship on March 8. Let’s support our team as they play in their final round of the season. Manitoulin will be proud of them regardless of the outcome.
There is a travel bug in the air. The Greece and Italy trip is almost here. There are students going to Europe over the March Break to experience new cultures, see beautiful sights, and try lots of new things. Laura Brown, a Grade 10 student going on the trip ,says, “I am excited about the trip, but also nervous about pick pocketers. I’m sure it will be a great trip.” The group leaves on March 12 to fly to their first stop in Italy.
You don’t have to travel the world to be a global citizen, SHARE/Go Green conducted a Twitter Poll to decide on their next world changing goal. Overwhelmingly, participants voted to support Free the Children projects in Kenya. On March 3 from 7 to 9 pm, SHARE is organizing a Coffee House to start off their new fundraising goal. Community members are invited to come to MSS and enjoy coffee or tea and dessert while listening to local musicians and stand-up comedy. All of the proceeds from the event will be going to support projects in Kenya.
Overall, the school is very busy being hypnotised, getting into new extracurriculars, and getting ready for trips. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
