With the end of first semester right around the corner, students came back to school from a fun Christmas break. Students have been receiving their culminating projects and taking final unit tests to prepare for their exams, which are starting on January 28 and continuing into the first week of February.

On Thursday, January 7, both the senior and junior basketball teams played valiantly against the Elliot Lake Atoms. The junior boys’ played really strong offense, while the seniors had great defense. MSS was outperformed and out-scored, but the teams played with great heart.

On Thursday, January 7, Madame Desbiens, the staff supervisor for SHARE/Go-Green, called an unplanned SHARE meeting. When the group was gathered, they found out that, after five years of ongoing fundraising, SHARE had raised $10,000, enough funds to build a school in Haiti through the Free the Children Brick by Brick campaign. After a moment of disbelieving silence, there were tears, hugs, and cheers. SHARE has held countless fundraisers over the years and the whole group was extremely proud. The project completion coincided with the sixth anniversary of the Haiti Earthquake. The staff and students of MSS as well as the entire Manitoulin Community contributed regularly to the success of this project and can celebrate in the achievement.

Everyone is talking about what to wear and whom to go with because on January 15, Students’ Council is putting on a Winter Formal dance. The event is semi-formal, and there will great music, and lots of dancing. Tickets were $10 a person and $15 a couple if you prepaid starting on Monday. Paying at the door, tickets will cost $15 a person. Students will be able to take pictures and dance from 7:30 to 10:30 pm.

The MSS Musical, Once Upon a Mattress, is well underway, with choreography being finalized, lines being memorized, and scenes becoming smooth. Kayla Greenman, playing Lady Larken, says, “The production has been a very positive experience, and I am honoured to be a part of it. I am impressed at how fast everyone is learning their lines and songs.” The tickets for the February 11-13 run of the show will be on sale soon all over Manitoulin Island.

Back from Christmas break, everyone in the school is getting back into routines and supporting each other through the home stretch of Semester 1.

‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
