M.S.S. Kids in the Hall

This week has been full of fun activities for the Grade Nine Welcome Week. Monday was Ultimate frisbee, Tuesday was a Skittles guessing contest. The winners of the Skittles jars were Jason Quackenbush who won the small jar and Skyler Danville who won the big jar. Wednesday was MSS trivia, Thursday was a Rock-Paper-Scissors battle, and on Friday it was school colours day and face painting. At the end of lunch, the student council could be seen prowling the halls and slashing black and yellow stripes on unsuspecting students. Throughout the course of the week there was also a photo scavenger hunt for the Grade 9s. Hopefully, the Grade 9s participated in the various activities.

Thursday, September 17 was Stand Up Against Bullying Day. MSS students wore pink to support a safe, bully-free environment. The initiative started in Nova Scotia when a student was being bullied for wearing pink to school. Two of his peers stood up for him by wearing pink and encouraging others to do the same. Thank you to all the students and staff who wore pink to support this important cause.

The students’ council is being re-organized and is planning some fun activities, including the magazine drive. The co-presidents this year are Max Chapman, Ali Cosby and Rebecca Dawson. Staff reps are inviting students to fill out applications for the following executive positions: audio-visual technician, secretary, spirit rep., treasurer, public relations, and junior representative for Grade 9 and 10 students. There will be interviews for the positions later in the week.

The boys’ hockey team tryouts are starting this week. Good luck to all the guys trying out. The senior and junior girls’ basketball teams are decided. The junior team consists of Hannah Woestenenk, Kayla Greenman, Maggie Eadie, Ryann Hudson, Maddy Niven, Ashlyn Hare, Cassandra Bisson, Sarah Hovingh, Elena Hovingh, Beth Wiwchar, Sarah Bayer and Sandi Kuntsi. They are being coached by Connor Croft and David Scott. The senior team is coached by Ms. Toner and includes Honor Esquimaux, Kylie Cranston, Michelle Campbell, Nea Saunders, Courtney Oswald, Kristina Renwick, Meaghan Wall, Jackie Cooper, Ali Cosby and Kennedy Lanktree. The teams are both training hard for their first home games on October 8. The junior and senior boys’ volleyball teams are also practicing hard, getting ready for their first tournament. The members of the golf team are Roger Beaudin Jr., Justice Corbiere, Chris Cooper, David Scott, Dylan Francis, Cole King, Logan Debassige, Ronson Odjig, Connor Croft, Brad Sayyae and Mackenzie Turner. They are getting in as many holes as possible in preparation for their Pre-NSSSA on September 23. The coach of the golf team is Mrs. Addison.

Whether they play on a school team, wear pink to stand up against bullying, or vote in a Skittles guessing game, MSS students know the value of participation. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
