GORDON/BARRIE ISLAND – You don’t have to always see your shot actually entering the cup to notch a hole in one in golf, and this was the case for a Gordon/Barrie Island Township man who scored the first ace in his lifetime last week at Manitoulin Golf.
“I saw it land on the apron (in front of the green) and roll up towards the hole,” Bill Temple told the Recorder. “I didn’t see the ball actually go in the hole. Gary Tipper (his playing partner) said ‘it is going to be close to the hole.’ And as we drove down the hill toward the hole we could see the top of the ball. It was right in the cup but because of the new lift (for COVID-19) you could still see the top of the ball.”
The hole-in-one took place on Thursday of last week at Manitoulin Golf, and Mr. Temple garnered the ace on the par three fourth hole, 155 yards, using a three wood.
“Yes, it was the first hole-in-one I’ve had in my life,” Mr. Temple confirmed. He acknowledged Mr. Tipper was probably more excited about the ace than he was at the time. “I’ve been playing golf so long without getting a hole-in-one, even if I saw it go into the cup I don’t think it would have excited me much anyway. I think he (Mr. Tipper) was more excited about the shot than I was.”
