M’Chigeeng man faces aggravated assault charge
During the evening hours of May 18 the UCCM Anishnaabe Police were called to a disturbance on the M’Chigeeng First Nation. UCCM Police attended a location at the Pinewood Park area of M’Chigeeng and found a person suffering from injuries to his head. During that time, police commenced an investigation into the circumstances that led to the victim’s injuries. The 43-year-old male victim from the M’Chigeeng First Nation was transported to the Manitoulin Heath Centre for treatment and was later transferred to Sudbury for further treatment where he remains in serious but stable condition.
Police later determined that the victim was injured as a result of an attack on May 18 and as a result, a 26-year-old man from the M’Chigeeng First Nation now faces a charge of aggravated assault contrary 268(1) to the Criminal Code of Canada. The accused was arrested by police on May 22 and was held in custody pending bail on May 25 at the Gore Bay Court.
UCCM Police charge Whitefish River man following sexual assault investigation
The UCCM Anishnaabe Police were called to investigate a report that a female person had been sexually assaulted on May 19 on the Whitefish River First Nation. Police commenced an investigation into an incident that allegedly occurred during a house party over the Victoria Day long weekend at a private residence.
Following the investigation, police obtained an arrest warrant for a 60-year-old man of the Whitefish River First Nation and subsequently arrested him on May 23. The 60-year-old man was held on custody pending bail on May 25 at Gore Bay Court and charged with one count of sexual assault contrary to Section 271 of the Criminal Code of Canada.
