Police seeking information into statue vandalism incident
On Friday, July 17 at around 8:30 am, a town employee of the Assiginack Township reported to the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) that sometime overnight, vandalism was done at the deer statue adjacent to Highway 6 at the Tourist Information Booth in Manitowaning. Police attended and noticed that bright yellow paint had been poured over the metal statue and surrounding area. Police have initiated an investigation into this mischief of property.

Police seeking information into ATM theft incident
On Wednesday, July 15 at around 4 am, unknown suspect(s) entered the Mindemoya laundromat known as Island Rub and Scrub located on King Street in Mindemoya. An ATM machine was breached and an undisclosed amount of money was taken. Damage to the machine is in excess of over $4,000. The Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently investigating this theft and is seeking the public’s assistance in solving this crime.

Vandalism on Treasure Island
On Monday, July 13 at around 11:30 am, the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was notified of a series of break and enters that occurred sometime in the past day to several buildings located on Treasure Island in Lake Mindemoya. Police attended the island to find that the main lodge and seven other outbuildings and cabins had been broken into. Once inside culprit(s) caused extensive damage by smashing doors, extinguishing fire extinguishers and destroying property.
They entered the garage area and caused damage to two golf carts. Damage is estimated in the thousands of dollars. OPP have started an investigation into these break and enters and is seeking the public’s assistance in solving these crimes.

ATV/Off Road Vehicles safety initiative
The UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service has recently received numerous complaints from its communities and community members regarding the unsafe operation of ATV/off road vehicles (ORV) in our communities. Some of the complaints are regarding dangerous driving, underage and unlicenced operators operating on the community roads, walking and bicycle paths. These walking paths are an extension of the highway according to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario and the law requires you to have a valid drivers licence, registration and insurance to operate an ATV/ORV along the highway.
Over the next few weeks the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service will be available to provide ATV/ORV safety presentations in our communities as the initial stage of our initiative and also step up enforcement of these violations.
