OPP Community Street Crime Unit seizes suspected cocaine in Little Current
On Monday, March 19, at approximately 7:40 pm, officers from the Manitoulin-Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), with the assistance of the United Chiefs and Council of Manitoulin (UCCM) Anishnaabe Police, the Wikwemikong Tribal Police and the North East Region OPP Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), executed a search warrant at a residence on Blake Street in Little Current.
Officers seized a quantity of suspected marijuana and suspected cocaine. In addition, a quantity of suspected counterfeit currency was seized.
As a result of the investigation, a 29-year-old male of Little Current has been charged with: possessing counterfeit money; possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking, cocaine; and possession of a Schedule II Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking, under 3 kg.
The accused is scheduled to appear at the Provincial Court of Justice in Gore Bay on April 17, 2018.
OPP officer stops an impaired driver on Highway 6
On Saturday, March 17 at approximately 5:45 pm, an officer from the Manitoulin-Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a vehicle being operated in an erratic manner on Highway 6 in Assiginack Township.
The officer determined that the driver of the motor vehicle had been consuming alcoholic beverages.
As a result of the investigation, a 30-year-old male of Sudbury has been charged with: driving while ability impaired by alcohol, and driving with over 80 mg of alcohol in blood.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on April 17.
OPP annual distracted driving campaign results in multiple charges
The Manitoulin-Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) recently wrapped up a week-long Distracted Driving campaign which started on March 12 and concluded on March 18. Over the course of the campaign officers kept observation for motorists who were using a cell phone while driving. During the week a total of 10 motorists were charged with using a hand-held electronic device while driving and one driver was charged with careless driving which was distraction related.
OPP officers worked extremely hard to keep Manitoulin and Espanola roadways safe, resulting in several other charges: 37 speeding charges, eight suspended driving charges, one stunt driving charge, three seatbelt charges and 20 other Provincial Offences Act charges.
As the Easter Long Weekend approaches officers will be taking part in the OPP’s Easter Long Weekend Spring Seat Belt Campaign, which runs from March 30 to April 2. Seat belts save lives. Buckle up!
April is Gun Amnesty month
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in collaboration with participating municipal police services are holding a Gun Amnesty during the month of April.
The gun amnesty is for any Ontario resident who wishes to voluntarily surrender unwanted or illegally-owned firearms, weapons, accessories or ammunition.
The amnesty is a way to provide citizens with a safe way to surrender weapons and enhance public safety. During the amnesty, police will not recommend weapons-related Criminal Code charges that might otherwise apply to people who are turning in these items. Police note no amnesty is offered for people who turn in weapons that have been used in the commission of a crime. No anonymous submissions will be accepted.
Interested gun owners are strongly urged to call the OPP (or their local police service’s) non-emergency number at 1-888-310-1122 to arrange for officers to attend and safely retrieve the weapons. Gun owners can also use the OPP website button-www.opp.ca/gunamnesty—or the Citizen Self Reporting tool to notify police.
Under no circumstances should anyone deliver guns or ammunition directly to police facilities.
